February 2009
See, this artwork is considerably less disturbing than MWF3. Telling you whose smile graces the cover might get me in hot water. Purify handled all production this go around and even busted out post-production.
Invisible Guns- These lyrics were originally written to a DRU PHIT beat. No matter how many times I recorded, the vocals didn't quite fit. I tried the lyrics on this bombastic beat and thought "Scoreolympics!" The song title comes from me wondering why people think they're tough when holding imaginary guns and making angry faces at the photographer. I mean, little kids play with invisible guns because they're still in fantasyland. At least GZA actually had a photo where he was holding guns.
Piece of Paper- Why is it that the darker beats, which were once so easy to write to, have become a stumbling block? I loved this beat the first time I heard it and wrote a Burn Unit amount of songs to it. After lying to myself that something angry would fit, I opted to use piece of paper which had gotten filled with words during the time following Brenn and Amy's wedding.
Rapping Force- RhymeWise37 and I teamed up over the span of quite a while to put together this track. I wanted to make sure it featured more back and forth verses, so we traded lines more frequently than our work on Sing It Backwards. Purify added a dope beat change follow up at the track's end. The new beat is fresh enough that it's perfect Muggs bait (see "99 Goggles").
Silly Sadists- This is about people hitting on my wife and me laughing at them getting shot down. The hook was written the same night as "Piece of Paper." The way I say the last line "and I'm it" reminds me of Souls of Mischief. Must be that two syllable rime thing. When RhymeWise37 heard a preliminary version of the song, he fell down laughing. Must have been him imagining me getting in trouble.
Birkencrocs- Jon Ross' girlfriend Nina is a talented chef. After a Definitely Gary (one of J. Ross' 500 bands) gig, I looked down at Nina's feet and gave her grief about wearing crocs. She insisted they were Birkenstocks, but they're really Birkencrocs. I liked the word so much, I promised to make a song.
Iowa to Indiana- Before the Music with Friends franchise of free, I'd rocked Purify's beat and sent him the track. As Purify put finishing touches on MWF4, he asked about including this track. Good call.
